I can’t tell if his new show will last more than a season, but it was good enough to bring me back for another week. It wasn’t Chappelle’s Show brilliant, but it was pretty good.

I get the sense that Martin is a real person, by which I mean that he seems like he’s being himself, a down-to-earth guy who happens to be very funny. So many actors and comics only play a character in public. I love moments when it seems to me I can see a real person, like Christian Bale’s meltdown on audio that’s currently burning up the tubes of the internets, or this behind-the-scenes clip from Demetri Martin’s show.

I want to like the show, because I so adore Martin’s standup. He’s an original and insightful comic. His standup segments from the show, however, annoyed me more than they made me laugh. The audience guffawed at every statement, whether there was a joke or not. It was almost like having a laugh track. Martin undoubtedly has a team of writers to pad out the amount of material he has to produce to have a series, and I don’t begrudge that. But it doesn’t capture the magic of his comedy specials. The sketches are suprisingly funny, and those will keep me watching for a while. It’s not perfect, but Martin could well grow into the half hour format if he’s given enough of a chance.

And just to be clear, I don’t think Bale’s “true self” is the screaming asshole on his audio clip. He may be that more or less, I don’t care. I will say it’s taken out of context from the set of a big budget film and there’s more than a little pressure on the actors to put some life into the 4th movie of a tired franchise. Bale may be justified or not, I can’t know. But it’s not a persona he put on for the public, it’s his raw anger and it’s something we all have the potential to match. It’s real.

Um, yeah. Also, there’s this exciting new series called 24 that is so awesome! I hate to be cynical, but this just makes it clear that a show I used to love has not only devolved into merely a long string of gags (although, admittedly, some episodes from this season had a bit of the old spark in them. Just a bit.), but is weirdly late to the High-Def game.

It’s telling when a parody mashup evokes more glee than the high cost production of a major network’s powerhouse series.

This is amazing work. Jazz pianist Henry Hey did an outstanding job creating a song out of spoken words. We don’t often think about it, but words have musical pitch (which is obvious to anybody in China, where they use pitch & tone as an integral part of language). Hey used the pitch of George W. Bush’s words as the melody and crafted something fantastically cool.

But Steve Vai has done this a lot, notably in Ya-Yo Gakk, a 1995 track using his son Julian’s nonsense babble.

But I first heard him doing it a decade earlier, on So Happy, from 1984′s Flex-Able. It doesn’t hold up so well, but it’s really an experiment, and not meant to be a pop single.

I like Massive Attack, especially the collaboration with Mos Def on the Blade 2 soundtrack. But nothing they’ve done stirs my soul like Teardrop, from 1998′s Mezzanine. Most people know it as the theme from House. I’m glad I heard it soon after its release. It was part of a stream of ambient and dance music fed to me by a cow orker who was madly in love with the rave scene even as it was dying, and for which I’m forever grateful, as I’d been ignorant of most of the “electronica” side of music for several years previous. My life is richer for hearing Aphex Twin, Lull, Autechre, Boards of Canada, Orbital, and dozens of others. And, of course, Massive Attack, featuring Liz Fraser:

Did I mention the time I almost destroyed my family’s livelihood with one careless match? We were living in Safford, Arizona. My grandfather started a fish farm, and my mom, one uncle, and their families joined him in the venture. I didn’t yet hate Safford. It was still new, I was 13, and we’d moved around enough that my only friends were family members.

There were cattails dotted around the 40-acre property where the artesian water flowed. If you’ve ever seen these things in the fall, they burst into a shower of fluffy white fuzz at the slightest touch. We used to cut off stalks, throw them in the air, and watch them explode like mortars when they hit the ground. I discovered that if you broke open one of the heads and spread the fuzz out, they’d burn in a flash, like gunpowder, almost. One evening in late fall, like an idiot, I broke a cattail open amongst the stalks and lit it. The ensuing flames spread further into the swampy pond, and started to burn some of the reedy stalks that were dry at the onset of the cold weather. I panicked, and tried to stomp it out, pushing over more stalks against the low flame. Instead of smothering the fire, I had fed it more fuel, and it jumped up, hungrily. I tried to throw a few pathetic handfuls of dirt on the growing fire, but it was already out of hand. I ran to get my grandfather, and he notified the rest of the adults. Everyone spent a harrowing couple of hours fighting the blaze.

After the fire was under control again, my uncle confronted me.
“Are you responsible for this?” he asked. I had a lump in my throat and couldn’t speak, but I nodded my assent. His eyes narrowed.
“Come with me,” he said, crooking his finger at me, and strode away. I followed. He led me to the big pipe that channeled fresh water into the fish tanks. It was charred and swollen along the bottom where the fire had touched it.
“You see this? If this thing had burst, we’d have no way to repair it. We would have lost all the fish,” he said.
He didn’t have to explain further. The system depended on a constant flow of water as it drained out of the middle of the tanks. I knew that would have made me responsible for tens of thousands of dollars in losses, not to mention no prospect of viable future income for a long time. My uncle watched this notion sink deep into my brain and nodded.
“You got lucky,” he said. I was too scared and ashamed to say anything, and too afraid to look anywhere but my shoes.

After that, I was never quite so careless with fire. But that’s not to say I didn’t play with it. Hey, our little eastern Arizona town bored the bejeezus out of us. My brother, cousins, and I still did plenty of dumb stunts now and again. But I stopped well short of endangering anything other than us. Remind me someday and I’ll tell you how my cousin Adam gave himself a virtual leg wax with a bicycle and a flaming gallon milk jug.

But watching others’ stupidity and laughing over it kept Jackass on the air for quite a while, and I couldn’t do anything but howl with laughter at the following fiasco:
