In Praise of Tiny Post-Its

The gold ones are neat, but I especially love the neon green kind. I use them to make lists of stuff on Amazon.com I want (yes, in addition to my wish list). I use them to keep a running total of checks we’ve written. I write phone numbers on them. I put reminders on them. I have no fewer than sixteen scattered around my computer monitor, my keyboard wrist rest, the dining table, and a little stand I bought just to organize Post-It Notes.

Occasionally, I use them for sketches. My New Year’s resolution in 2003 was to do at least one sketch a day from life. I made it through most of August, by the way. I, like most artists, need to practice more, and making a habit of doing life drawing is the essential, fundamental skill that underpins all others. Usually, I’d put it off until just before I went to bed, so I ended up with dozens of sketchbook pages full of hands and feet. Mostly hands, I love hands. A quick glance through the comic archive and that’s obvious. Since last year, though, the sketchbook gets used for design layouts and larger work. An ephemeral medium can be better suited for quickies.

Those little day-glow rectangles are just the right size, not too big, not too small. For now. I’ve got my eye on the original size square ones. Neon green. I think this could qualify as a fetish.
